New Models: Toyota Hilux GR Sport bakkie switches to V6 engine in South America!

Toyota in South America has taken the wraps off an updated version of the familiar GR Sport bakkie, ditching the four-cylinder diesel engine for a petrol-powered V6.

The updated Hilux GR Sport features the Japanese firm’s 4,0-litre six-cylinder petrol engine (which is already offered here in South Africa in the range-topping Legend 50 model), delivering 175 kW and 376 N.m to all four wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission.

Toyota claims this powertrain generates “more energetic acceleration with faster reactions” than the diesel, giving the vehicle a “sporty character that results in a more thrilling ride”.

Like the 2,8-litre diesel version offered locally (and now alongside the new V6 version in markets such as Brazil), the petrol-powered Hilux GR Sport gains “suspension enhancements”, as well as a revamped exterior and interior design.

From the outside, the Hilux GR Sport still features a model-specific grille, although Toyota has opted to tone down the decals (the stickers are now limited to the bottom of the doors). In addition, the V6 version adopts a new style of 17-inch alloy wheels, wrapped in 265/65 R17 AT rubber. Inside, the perforated black leather upholstery now features a red background, matching the red stitching used throughout the cabin.

It remains to be seen whether Toyota South Africa Motors will follow South America’s lead and offer the GR Sport in V6 form, too.
