Ford has revealed the first images of as many as six new Ranger-based concepts, with the vehicles all set to debut at the 2019 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show.
The Blue Oval brand says the custom rides showcase a “wide range of personalisation opportunities”.
“The automotive aftermarket space continues to grow at a tremendous pace, from powerful street machines to the latest trends in overlanding and off-road,” said Eric Cin, global director for Ford Vehicle Personalisation and Accessories.
Let’s take a look at each of the concepts…
First up is the Tjin Edition Ford Ranger, created by father-and-son designers Neil and Collin Tjin. Their version of the double-cab bakkie features a wide, low stance, going in the opposite direction to the typical lifted Ranger. The Tjin Edition is dropped to the ground thanks to an air suspension system, lowering the vehicle some 203 mm at the front and 299 mm at the rear.
Tjin worked with JR’s Wheels and Tires to create what Ford calls a “sinister look”, fitting Falken rubber on custom 20-inch Rotiform LHR-M three-piece wheels. The 2,3-litre EcoBoost engine has been upgraded with a Roush Performance intake, a Ford Performance cat-back exhaust (and differential cover), Optima yellow-top battery and an RPG front-mounted intercooler. Stopping power comes from Baer six-piston callipers.
Styling changes include a set of RTR fender flares, an RTR grille with LED lights, custom BASF yellow paint, a one-off wood bed floor in black with stainless steel hardware, a retractable bed cover from Retrax, PowerTank CO2 system, Rigid foglamps and Lumens bed lights. The cockpit features four Recaro Sportster CS seats that recline, plus Schroth harnesses.
Then there’s the RTR Rambler Ford Ranger, which is billed as the “ultimate overlanding and support vehicle”. The concept is equipped with custom elements such as a SkyRise tent and integrated snowboard support capsule, as well as a Fox off-road suspension levelling kit (with a 51 mm front lift). There’s also underbody protection, custom RTR fenders and RTR Tech 6 wheels with 33-inch Nitto Ridge Grappler tyres.
Next is the Yakima Ford Ranger, created by Ford Accessories partner Yakima. This show car has been upgraded with various Ford Performance parts, including a new Fox off-road suspension levelling kit, a recovery kit, a cat-back exhaust and a rear differential cover. RPG bumpers, side steps, a Warn winch, Rigid lighting and Fuel Recoil off-road wheels (shod in 33-inch BFGoodrich T/A KO2 rubber) also feature. A bed rack, JayLow kayak mount and HangOver vertical four-bike carrier have furthermore been included.
And what about the Advanced Accessory Concepts Ford Ranger? Well, this show car is based on an XLT variant but gains AFN bumpers, a skid plate, rock sliders and a Ford Performance rear differential cover. In addition, it features a conversion to an AFN aluminium load bed, complete with canopy. An Icon 89 mm lift kit with Vector wheels and Warn Zeon Platinum 10-S winch provide the ability to go into what Ford calls “uncharted areas”. There’s also a Tepui Hybox tent and classic 50-quart refrigerator by ARB.
Next up is the Hellwig Ford Ranger, which the Blue Oval brand bills as the “ultimate adventure vehicle for outdoor enthusiasts who value sustainability”. The vehicle boasts an Icon suspension upgrade, 17-inch Icon Compression wheels and Falken tyres, along with Hellwig sway bars, a Ford Performance Parts cat-back exhaust, a rear differential cover and a recovery kit. Addictive Desert Designs rock sliders and bumpers, Rigid lighting, an ARB jack and Bushwacker fender flares round out the off-roading gear. There’s also a Tepui hard-shell tent, Trail Kitchens stove and a DC Safety first-aid and roadside assistance kit. But what really sets this off-roader apart is its use of Goal Zero solar power.
Lastly, there’s the Ford Performance Parts Ford Ranger, complete with Fox off-road suspension (providing a 51 mm lift up front), Ranger Raptor wheels (with BFGoodrich All-Terrain KO2 tyres), a bonnet-hinge light kit with Rigid DSS-Series lights, Rigid 30-inch SR-Series Pro lightbar atop the front bumper, two Rigid SR-Series Pro lightbars for the front bumper’s lower opening and Rigid D-Series 2×2 LED cube lights in the foglamp openings.
Other components include a Warn 9,5 XP winch, a heavy-duty recovery kit (with red tow hooks), a Tepui HyBox rooftop tent, a Decked load bed storage system, RSI Smart Cap, ARB Elements refrigerator/freezer and ActionTrax recovery boards.
