New Models: Check out this crazy (SA-built!) Land Rover Defender 6×6 bakkie…

The folks over at Classic Overland have taken the wraps off a restored Land Rover Defender 6×6 bakkie, which has fittingly been dubbed the “Black Mamba”.

While its headquarters are in Georgia in the United States, the firm’s South African arm sources local Defender 110 units and rebuilds them, before shipping the completed models over to customers in North America.

This particular build, though, appears quite special. Classic Overland says it found the original vehicle parked at a fire station in Franschhoek outside Cape Town with a mere 30 000 km on the clock. Previously used as an emergency vehicle, the special Defender was already in six-wheel form, complete with a tuned 3,5-litre V8 engine.

The company then completed a thorough restoration. From what we understand, the aforementioned engine has been ditched for a 6,2-litre V8 generating 321 kW and 576 N.m.

As you can tell from the accompanying images, Classic Overland has added hefty fender flares, a roll bar over the load bed, side-step tubing, underbody protection, a winch, a new bonnet, a snorkel, LED taillamps, Maxxis Trepador Extreme off-road tyres and a black leather interior.

The price? Somewhere around $315 000 … which translates to about R4,7-million.
