News: Hyundai i30 N for South Africa: more details emerge ahead of launch…

Back in July 2019, Hyundai Automotive South Africa confirmed the i30 N would be offered locally in “limited numbers”. And now more details have emerged ahead of the launch of the Korean hot hatch.

Speaking to CARmag.co.za at the Frankfurt motor show, a Hyundai SA spokesperson confirmed the local launch was scheduled to take place in January 2020.

According to the spokesperson, Hyundai SA’s initial plan is to bring in 50 units of the hot hatch per year, although we suspect that number could change depending on how well the i30 N is received by local buyers.

Interestingly, he added the front-driven hot hatch would be retailed through just 12 of the local distributor’s 100+ dealerships dotted round the country. Pricing, of course, has yet to be confirmed.

As an aside, don’t expect to see the new i30 N Project C on local roads, with all 600 units of this “more extreme” special edition destined for garages in Europe.

Revealed as long ago as July 2017, the Hyundai i30 N employs a 2,0-litre turbocharged engine worth up to 202 kW (with the Performance Package specified) and 353 N.m, with drive directe to the front wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox.

Earlier in 2019, the local arm’s sales and operations director suggested the i30 N Fastback was also under consideration for the local market, along with the as-yet-unrevealed Kona N.
