New Models: New Ferrari F8 Spider breaks cover with 530 kW and a retractable hard top

Ferrari has whipped the covers off the new F8 Spider, which features a retractable hard top and a mid-rear-mounted V8 generating 530 kW.

The Maranello-based firm bills the newcomer as “less extreme than the 488 Pista Spider, but sportier than the 488 Spider which it replaces in the range”.

The F8 Spider is some 20 kg lighter than the aforementioned 488 Spider (and weighs 20 kg more than the 488 Pista Spider). The Italian automaker furthermore claims the F8 Spider is “significantly more aerodynamically efficient” than its forebear.

As in the Ferrari F8 Tributo coupé, the turbocharged 3,9-litre V8 offers 530 kW (at 8 000 r/min) and 770 N.m (at 3 250 r/min), revving to 8 000 r/min and driving the rear axle via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

The sprint from standstill to 100 km/h takes a claimed 2,9 seconds – matching the time of the F8 Tributo – while the 200 km/h mark is reached in a claimed 8,2 seconds (four-tenths slower than the coupé). Top speed, meanwhile, is 340 km/h.

Ferrari says the exhaust layout has been “extensively modified across the board” to produce a sound “absolutely unique to this particular car”. The retractable hard top takes 14 seconds to deploy or retract and can be closed or opened while the car is on the move up to speeds of 45 km/h.
